Schools

Leeds Trinity University, formerly Leeds Trinity University College, is an independent university after a period as an accredited college of the University of Leeds. The residential campus is located off Brownberrie Lane, Horsforth.

The further education college Leeds City College has a site in Horsforth called the Horsforth Campus.

The main secondary school is Horsforth School. Horsforth’s state sector primary schools are West End Lane Primary School, St Margaret’s Primary School, Newlaithes Primary School, Westbrook Lane Primary School, Broadgate Lane Primary School, St Mary’s Catholic Primary School and Featherbank Primary School.

There is an independent primary school, The Froebelian School.

Transport

Horsforth railway station is on the Harrogate line between Harrogate and Leeds. Kirkstall Forge railway station is also located around two miles from Horsforth station.

The town is served by several bus routes from Pudsey to Crossgates, Yeadon to East Garforth, Seacroft to Holt Park, Leeds City to Guiseley and Leeds to Otley along with the Horsforth Town Circular.

The nearest airport is Leeds Bradford Airport, in neighbouring Yeadon approximately 2.6 miles away.

By road, Horsforth has excellent transport links into the city centre via A65 and the town sits on the outer ring road giving easy access to the motorways – M62, M621, M1 and A1(M).

Properties in Horsforth

Horsforth offers a variety of properties from Yorkshire stone cottage style terraces to new build detached properties. According to Rightmove, as of March 2019, the average terraced property is priced at £200,183 and semi-detached properties achieving £293,636. From October 2018 to March 2019, prices on average for detached properties have increased by almost £60,000, increasing from £395,150 to a whopping £454,200.

Horsforth has plenty to shout about with it’s fantastic schools and excellent transport links and the area therefore commands premium value properties that are highly sought after. Did you know?

During the Second World War the £241,000 required to build the corvette (submarine to you and I) HMS Aubrietia was raised entirely by the people of Horsforth. In ‘today’s’ money, that sum would be worth around £10.7 million! In November 1941 HMS Aubrietia was adopted by the community of Horsforth following a warship week National Savings Campaign. This was over twice the target figure of £120,000. The submarine helped to capture a complete enigma machine including its code book. Aubrietia also took part in depth charge and hedgehog attacks on the German submarine U-731 in the Strait of Gibraltar which was sunk with no survivors, along with her convoy escort duties in the Atlantic and Mediterranean.

Many notable people are from the village of Horsforth, to name but a few:

• Although originally from London, in the 1970s the former politician Ed Miliband attended Featherbank Primary School, and his brother David Miliband attended Newlaithes Primary School, when their father Ralph Miliband was a professor at the University of Leeds.
• Footballer James Milner attended Horsforth School and used to play for Leeds United, Newcastle United, Aston Villa and Manchester City. He currently plays for Liverpool and is an English International Footballer.
• The actors Matthew Lewis (Neville Longbottom in the Harry Potter film series), Patric Knowles, Frazer Hines and Malcolm McDowell, famous for his film roles including If…, A Clockwork Orange and O Lucky Man!
• Sean Conlon who was in the boyband Five, grew up in Horsforth and attended St Mary’s RC Primary School.
• Olympic atheletes the Brownlee Brothers, Johnny and Alistair, who won Gold at London 2012 and were honoured with a commerative golden postbox which is just a few doors down from our Horsforth office, Bronze medallist Johnny Clay and paralympic Gold medallist David Stone.
